Before Riding an Electric Bike

The very first thing you should be doing before you ride an electric bike is taking a close look at the bike itself. Just like regular bike, you’ll want to make sure that the bike is in good shape and that it’s charged up properly so it’s ready to go. But you’ll also want to take a look at just how to ride an electric bike safely before you actual start your ride.

  1. 1. Keep the bike in shape – this includes looking at the tires to be sure they’re inflated properly, checking the treads on them, paying attention to the battery, watching for any damage to your bike, and more.
  2. 2. Know the law – understand the laws regarding electric bikes in your area before you hop on so you’re better protected in case of any run-ins with law enforcement or even other motorists.
  3. 3. Always wear a helmet – a helmet protects you in case of an accident or a fall. While it can’t protect you from all injuries, it does a lot to keep your head protected and can prevent concussions and other serious injuries.
  4. 4. Plan your ride – know where you’re going to go and how you’re going to get there as well as how long it’s going to take including things like the weather, the terrain, and even the timing.
  5. 5. Have the right accessories – accessories like the E-Bike HD Wide Angle Review Mirror are important so you can see what’s coming up behind you no matter where you’re riding.

During the Ride on Your Electric Bike

When you hit the road you still have plenty that you need to keep any eye on and that includes paying attention to an e-bike ride checklist. You don’t want to find yourself well prepared before the ride only to fall apart after the ride is over.

  1. 1. Make sure you are visible – visibility means that you need to stay within eyesight of drivers whenever possible and make sure that you wear reflective gear if you’re driving at night. Lights are also a good option.
  2. 2. Know where your feet are – since you don’t need to pedal with an electric bike you may not think about your foot placement as being important but it absolutely is. You don’t want your feet to get in the way of the mechanics of your bike.
  3. 3. Watch getting on and off – these bikes are heavy and they can be a little awkward for some so be sure you’re paying attention as you dismount and mount up on the bike.
  4. 4. Use your mirrors – those mirrors are there for a reason and the number one reason is so you don’t hit anyone (or get hit) while riding so make sure you’re checking them.
  5. 5. Monitor your speed and brakes – while you aren’t likely to exceed the speed limit with your bike, you could get going too fast for you to control, so be aware of how fast you’re going and how easily you’ll be able to slow down.

After Your Ride on an Electric Bike

Once you’ve completed your ride, it’s not time to hang up your helmet and head in for the day. Rather, it’s time to take a look at a thorough bike safety checklist. You want to make sure your bike is going to be ready to go the next time you want to ride. And that it’s going to be safe to do so. That means checking:

  1. 1. Brakes – check for wear and tear, proper positioning, control cables, levers, and proper function.
  2. 2. Wheels & tires – check that they are still well inflated and that the rims are not worn or treads damaged.
  3. 3. Steering column – check that the handlebars are properly set and tight as well as monitoring the locking mechanism and the positioning of all steering aspects.
  4. 4. Frame & fork – check for damage, bending, or broken pieces.
  5. 5. Chain – check that the chain is oiled properly and moves the way that it should.
  6. 6. Rear suspension – check that the suspension is properly connected and secured.
  7. 7. Bearings – check that there is proper lubrication and that all pieces of the bearings are well secured without too much movement.
  8. 8. Cranks & pedals – check that pedals and cranks are fastened securely and not bent.
  9. 9. Derailleurs – check that all mechanisms are properly aligned, secured, and lubricated for ease of use.
  10. 10. Accessories – check that all accessories are properly attached and secure including fittings, reflectors, and mirrors.
